COURTNEY FORCE RECOGNIZED BY ESPN
THE MAGAZINE NEXT ATHLETE

Every
year since 1998, ESPN The Magazine
has recognized an elite group of
emerging athletes to watch in the
year ahead -- athletes they call
NEXT. They are competitors not only
on the cusp of stardom, but on the
verge of transcending their sports.
NEXT is what happens when the hype
is real. This year John Force Racing
driver Courtney Force is in the
motorsports group going head to head
with Darrell Wallace Jr. (NASCAR),
Chase Elliot (NASCAR), Ryan Truex
(NASCAR) and Josef Newgarden (Indy
Car) as the NEXT big driver in
motorsports.
“This is really a big honor. I
honestly didn’t know I was being
considered as one of the NEXT
athletes. I am really excited about
my future and getting on the NHRA
Full Throttle Drag Racing Series
full time,” said Force, winner of
the 2009 Seattle NHRA national event
in the Top Alcohol Dragster
category. |

JFR HOLIDAY CAR SHOW BIGGEST EVER

A
day after the 14th annual John Force
Racing Holiday Car Show the staff at
the West Coast JFR HQ is still
recovering from what many long-time
employees consider the biggest and
most well attended holiday car show
ever. Fans began arriving at the
home of the 17-time championship
NHRA Funny Car headquarters and
museum at 7:30 a.m. even though the
event wasn’t scheduled to open to
the public until 10 a.m. and crowds
mingled long after the 4 p.m.
closing time. Crowd estimates by
local media exceeded 25,000 and the
number of toys donated is expected
to come close to 10,000 items for
the California Highway Patrol “CHiPS
For Kids” Toy Drive.
“We had a great weather and
thousands of people turned out to
support kids in need throughout
Orange County and Southern
California. It was an awesome,
awesome day,” said Craig Hoelzel,
Special Events Director for John
Force Racing. |

ASHER INTERVIEW: WORSHAM REVEALS WHY
HE RETIRED |

If you’re a fan of
college basketball you’re familiar
with the term “one and done.” It
refers to those highly talented
freshman who enter high-profile
college programs with the full
intention, and fore knowledge of
their coaches, that they’re only
going to be
there one year before heading off to
the NBA or pro teams in other parts
of the world.
Drag racing has never before had
a one and done champion, at least in
the modern era. There have certainly
been a number of one-time winners,
but as far as we can recall, there’s
never been a champion who announced
his retirement as a driver within a
week of taking the title – but then
again, there’s never before been a
champion quite like Del Worsham.
That Worsham has been the center
of a whirlwind of activities since
clinching his title while also
winning the Auto Club Finals race
itself is a considerable
understatement. He’s been involved
in so many phone calls and
face-to-face meetings in Santa
Maria, California with team owner
Alan Johnson and then in Ypsilanti,
Michigan at Kalitta Motorsports with
the principals there, that he’s
hard-pressed to even remember where
he is! “It’s been so hectic I’m not
sure if I’m coming or going,” he
said on Friday by phone from
Kalitta’s shop.
Worsham’s career path has been
interesting. After making his
professional debut in Funny Car in
1990 at the Finals he made the full
tour in ’91, wining twice and
earning Rookie of the Year honors.
The fresh-faced kid from Southern
California had a good thing going
with his father, Chuck, who was and
continues to be a very good tuner.
More importantly, father and son
quickly learned how to squeeze every
dollar into a buck-and-a-half by
doing almost everything themselves,
and it paid off with a two
decades-long career. Of course,
Worsham’s actually been competing
longer than that, cutting his teeth
in match races and the like before
hitting the NHRA trail. He’s also
appreciative of the sport’s history,
and is a staunch supporter – and
driver – of nostalgia Funny Cars. |

DEGENNARO, VENABLES JOIN JFR TEAM
FOR 2012 |

John Force
announced this week that crew chief
Danny DeGennaro has joined John
Force Racing Inc. and that Dickie
Venables, who helped Tony Pedregon
win a pair of NHRA Funny Car
Championships, is set to return to
JFR as part of the crew chief
"braintrust" that includes Jimmy
Prock, Mike Neff, Dean 'Guido'
Antonelli, Ron Douglas and Bernie
Fedderly.
DeGennaro, most recently tuned side
by side with Cruz Pedregon, who
finished in third place for the NHRA
Full Throttle Funny Car title, will
assume a similar role on a JFR Ford
Mustang Funny Car. With DeGennaro,
Pedregon started from the No. 1
position a category-best six times
last year and won the Countdown to 1
event at Dallas, Texas.
First hired by Prock to work on Joe
Amato's Top Fuel dragster in the
mid-1990s, the 36-year-old DeGennaro
also spent time at Kenny Bernstein
Racing where, in 2007, he worked
with Jimmy Walsh on the Monster
Energy Funny Car.
Venables, whose resume includes
stints with some of the top teams in
the sport including Joe Gibbs
Racing, Don Schumacher Racing, Al
Anabi Racing and Kalitta Racing, was
co-crew chief in 2003 when Pedregon
won the NHRA championship at the
wheel of the JFR-owned Castrol
SYNTEC Ford. |

Damien Harris took
his maiden win the ANDRA Pro Series
on Saturday night as he defeated
Andrew Cowin in the final of Top
Fuel's second championship round in
Perth.

In front of a vocal home crowd,
Harris waited until the final to lay
down low elapsed time of the event
in the Best Tractor Parts dragster,
a 4.72sec pass securing extra bonus
points as well as the long awaited
victory.
“It's been a long time coming and
it's pretty special,” he said. “I
got pretty amped up for the final, I
know Andrew is good on the tree and
the whole Cowin family are sharp
operators.
“I crept in a little bit more on the
beams to give myself that little bit
extra and we got there.” |

ADRL TO OFFER FIRST EFI PRO STOCKERS

In a landmark move for the
highly-competitive Extreme Pro Stock
(XPS) class, the American Drag
Racing League (ADRL) announced on
Saturday that it will allow
electronic fuel injection (EFI) on
all XPS cars starting in the 2012
season.
The 2012 ADRL Tour starts on March
30-31 with Dragpalooza VIII at Royal
Purple Raceway in Houston, the first
of 10 events on the 2012 ADRL
schedule.
With the ruling, the ADRL becomes
the first major drag racing
sanctioning body to allow EFI to be
used in any Pro Stock car. The
milestone announcement will add
further excitement to the Extreme
Pro Stock class, which had
record-breaking fields and
performances during the 2011 ADRL
season. With tremendous side-by-side
racing in the innovative class, XPS
was also arguably the most
competitive class in the ADRL in
2011.
Manufacturers wishing to have their
EFI Controllers in the world’s
premier eighth-mile drag racing
league will have to first submit
them to the ADRL for approval prior
to them being allowed to be used at
any ADRL event. |

YES, NECO, THERE IS A WAY TO HELP

"Now
I lay me down to sleep. I pray the
Lord my soul to keep. . . . "
Little Neco Pedregon said the
timeless bedtime prayer like he does
every night. But recently the
tenderhearted three-year-old asked a
special favor of his powerful
Friend.
When he reached the end of his
prayer, Neco said, "And God, please
help Mommy sell calendars so she can
help all the kids at the hospital."
This little boy, the youngest child
of two-time NHRA Funny Car champion
Tony Pedregon and wife Andrea, had
just made an emergency trip to the
hospital during the Auto Club NHRA
Finals at Pomona, Calif. Born with
an underdeveloped airway (a
condition called tracheomalacia)
that leaves him susceptible to
bronchitis, pneumonia, and other
respiratory ailments, Neco Pedregon
is familiar with hospitals.
And in his five years, he has seen
enough to understand his own medical
troubles pale in comparison. |

Following
another record season for the
popular Summit SuperSeries
grassroots program, the
International Hot Rod Association
(IHRA) has announced its Summit Team
Finals schedule for the 2012 racing
season.
Designed to give local racers an
opportunity to compete on a national
stage, the Summit SuperSeries and
the Summit Team Finals events have
grown each year since its inception
in 2002. Today, thousands of racers
from all across North America
compete at their local track for an
opportunity to advance to the Summit
Team Finals for a fun weekend of
racing with dozens of awards on the
line including a chance to advance
to the Summit SuperSeries World
Championships at the end of the
year.
“Over the past decade the Summit
SuperSeries and the Summit Team
Finals has grown into the preeminent
grassroots racing program,” said
IHRA President Aaron Polburn. “It
has been very exciting watching this
series grow like it has to include
tracks and racers from all corners
of North America. Overall the Summit
Team Finals is a fun event for the
racers and a great way to give them
the spotlight that they deserve. |
